The easiest description of a ceramic coating is that it is a protective layer applied to a surface that, once cured, has the natural characteristics of "glass."
These coatings are primarily found in either Silica Dioxide or Silica Carbide formulations, with a couple of different variations here and there. These tiny particles are extremely fine and form a thin layer that is completely invisible to the naked eye. They are able to fall into the natural pores of the paint and, once cured, create a surface that is hydrophobic, UV and chemical resistant, and able to handle much higher temperatures than a wax or a sealant.

A ceramic coating bonds a hard, water-shedding layer to your clear coat. Instead of soaking into the paint the way wax sits on top for a few weeks, the coating chemically links to the surface and stays there for years. Water beads and rolls off, road film and brake dust struggle to stick, and the paint keeps a deep, glassy gloss with far less effort from you.
It is not a force field: no coating is scratch-proof, so for rock-chip protection you still want paint protection film on the leading edges. What a coating does extremely well is resist UV fading, bird droppings, and the light swirl marks that dull a finish over time, while making every wash faster.
