Denver is the center of what meteorologists call Hail Alley, and it holds the record: the May 8, 2017 storm that crossed the metro at rush hour caused about $2.3 billion in insured losses, with roughly 167,000 auto claims, according to Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association figures. It remains the costliest hailstorm in Colorado history and the second costliest in the United States. The July 20, 2009 storm did about $1.1 billion before it, and the May 30, 2024 northeast-metro storm approached $2 billion. Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association figures put Colorado at three to four catastrophic hailstorms a year, each causing at least $25 million in insured damage.
Denver carries the highest totals on this list: 238 reports, 199 of them an inch or more. Part of that is simply population, because a city this size has far more people to file a report than Franktown does. Even allowing for it, 25 reports at 1.75 inches is second only to Aurora, and May 30, 2024 produced 54 reports in a single day, the busiest day anywhere in the dataset.
