Hail near Aurora, by the numbers.
Aurora is Colorado's third-largest city and sits where south-metro storms roll off the Divide onto the plains. The 1984 storm that battered the northwest suburbs also dropped large hail on southeast Denver and Aurora, with thousands of cars damaged and vehicle losses put at around $150 million at the time. On May 30, 2024 an unusually strong late-evening storm blanketed the northeast metro with golf-ball hail, an event compared with the record May 2017 storm. Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association figures put Colorado at three to four catastrophic hailstorms a year, each causing at least $25 million in insured damage.
Aurora is the outlier here, in the worst direction. It logged hail on the fewest separate days of any town on this list, 19, and still recorded 27 reports at 1.75 inches or larger, more than anywhere else. Sixteen percent of Aurora reports were that size against four percent in Parker. When it hails in Aurora it tends to hail hard. A single storm on May 30, 2024 accounted for 52 of those reports, and the largest stone in the whole dataset, 2.75 inches, fell at Denver International Airport inside Aurora's radius that evening.
